One tech enthusiast literally ripped the internal microphones out of his new television to ensure his living room remains strictly off the record.
YouTuber tfm55 physically dismantled his LG OLED smart TV after a massive data collection investigation surfaced online. A deep dive by Gamers Nexus revealed that modern televisions can scan local networks and use Automatic Content Recognition to identify everything viewers watch. In response to these smart TV privacy concerns, the creator opened his LG G6 OLED, disconnected the wireless antennas, and took out two tiny microphones from the internal circuitry.
LG rejected claims of continuous ambient recording but confirmed its devices do identify content for audience analysis and targeted advertising. Following the hardware surgery, the modified television still functioned perfectly, allowing the user to operate the display locally without any hardware surveillance risks.
How far would you go to protect your privacy from the devices in your own home?
