AI labs have run out of clean internet to train on. So they have gone shopping for paper. According to several reports, millions of second-hand and out-of-print books are being bought in bulk through anonymous middlemen, sliced open by hydraulic cutting machines, scanned page by page, and then sent for pulping.
Booksellers across America and Europe say they are being flooded with orders. And some of the books going into the shredder may be among the last surviving copies anywhere in the world.
